How to revive tired Roses!

While I was in hospital last week, my sister (on a food run!) sweetly brought me back a bunch of flowers to cheer me up. Purchased in Dunnes, a cute mix of coloured roses and some oriental lillies.

The poor flowers got forgotten in the car since Saturday last to my shame! So, on finding them on Thursday, I decided they needed some SOS treatment and quickly! All of the heads on the roses were drooping and wilted.

So, here’s what to do.

In one jug, have boiling water. In your vase have prepared, cold water with flower food. (In the absence of flower food, the tiniest dash of household bleach, tiny tiny dash!! and a teaspoon of sugar will do the trick!, the bleach keeps the water clean and the sugar will feed the flowers).

Cut a good inch off the bottom of the rose stems, on a diagonal – this increases the surface area that can soak up the water! Plunge them into the boiling water for approx. 30 seconds (plunge the stems, readers, not the heads!) and then immediately into the cold water.

Within a few hours, the rose heads will lift and start to bloom and look perfect again.

The first image was taken about 4 hours after the roses were treated, and the second picture 2 days later.

Now – that €6.99  bouquet of flowers has lasted for almost 10 days – even with the abuse it received :)

This treatment can be applied to roses as soon as you bring them home from the shop – it will really help them last much longer so you can enjoy them for longer! For other flowers, when you bring them home from the shop, unwrap from plastic, prepare vase with cold water and the sachet of fresh food that is attached to bouquet, cut stems a good inch from the bottom on diagonal and put them into water immediately!

A new Artist in the making

Just had to share these with my readers. My darling Son, R who is 18 months old had his first introduction to finger paints this morning.

Lessons I have learnt:
1. Buy coverall bib/overall type outfit for him – entire outfit is in the wash now covered in blue and yellow paint (I couldn’t find the red paint!)

2. Cover everything in 10 foot radius – table, chairs, counter on way to bathroom to wash hands, all covered in paint.

3. Put Dog out – She is now sporting blue fur and a yellow nose after jumping up to see what was going on, getting a big paint covered hug from R and then decided to taste the plate of paints while I was washing R’s hands!!

Nevertheless it was great fun, he got the hang of hand into paint onto paper v. quickly and was so proud of himself :) Ryan's Paintings.jpg

Christmas is coming!

According to the Santa on my Christas App on the Iphone, there are only 31 sleeps to go until Christmas! Eek how did that happen??

While I love love love Christmas and absolutely cannot wait (especially to see how baba reacts to it all!) I cannot believe how quickly it has come around this year! It’s going to be a very busy time for us with weddings the week before and immediately after Christmas day, so we will really value our 2 days break on 24th and 25th December!

Last week we took part in a Charity Christmas Craft Fair, with proceeds going towards Our Lady’ Hospital in Crumlin.

We really went to town creating lots of different Christmas wreaths and were inundated with orders, long may it continue!

If you are interested in ordering a wreath from us please do contact us to arrange same, our wreaths start at €25 each.

Eimear & Derek, 7th November 2009

A Scottish Groom and a Sligo Bride, who both arranged this wedding from Chicago U.S.A.! A pleasure to work with, Eimear was stunning on the day (and the groom scrubbed up well too)

The Church was St. Patricks in Curtlestown, Enniskerry, a quaint stone building set against the backdrop of the Wicklow mountains. We began by installing the Grand Wrought Iron Candelabra that were dressed with beautiful full central arrangement of Ruscus, Avalanche Roses, Thistles and lucious trailing greenery.

The Alter Unity Candle arrangement carried through the theme of thistle and roses, and also had deep purple lisanthus to add an extra depth of colour. We trimmed the Pew Ends with Organza Tulla wrapped around Avalanche Roses and Thistles, our luxurious Satin Covers for the Bride and Groom’s Chair completed the indoor decoration, and with a finishing touch, a pair of Bay Trees Dressed with Ivory Tulled graced the church doors.

The bridal bouquet was created in the hand-tied style, using avalanche roses, deep purple lisianthus, gorgeous delicate singapore orchids and of course, a hint of thistle as a nod to the Scottish element of the day! The Bridesmaid, who wore a gorgeous, handmade purple dress carried a complementary bouquet of roses, thistle and lisianthus. For the gorgeous flowergirl, we created a pomander ball of white chrysanthemums and deep purple lisianthus buds.

Of course, while we were in Enniskerry, a business lunch had to be had in Avoca cafe in Powercourt :)

The lengths I go to for a day off :)

Sorry readers that there has been no updates for some time. Unfortunately I spent a few days in the hospital last week and i’m under doctors orders to take it easy for a few days! Thanks to all in the Beacon Hospital for the fabulous care I received and really very nice food :)

Thankfully I was able to keep on top of emails thanks to the iphone and Lorraine stepped in and took over – and is checking in on me regularly to make sure i’m still in bed!

So, I’m catching up on my magazine reading and internet browsing but looking forward to getting back to work on thursday for the wedding on Friday.

In the meantime, posts to follow soon about the Christmas Demo we attended, the Charity Christmas Fair last week and more weddings in between!
